Window Locks

Window locks are quite an important part of the window as a whole. When you’re getting new window replacement it’s good to know what kind of locks come with your windows. Not only are they an integral part of the windows functionality, but they provide you with the protection. So, let’s jump right into today’s article on window locks.

Window Locks Of The Past

Most people know how old window locks used to work. Heck, you may even have old enough windows to still have these locks. If you don’t however, they look something like this (picture featured to the right.) In this example, you’d push the window down and they’d lock in place. These old type of window locks were very susceptible to break-ins. All someone had to do was crack the bottom of the window up and push the locks open to gain access to your house. If you still have these old locks your home is more vulnerable to break-ins than if you were to have new windows. I actually remember having these types of window locks in my childhood home. These Window “Sash Locks” as they were known are not typically made anymore.

Modern Locks

Seeing weaknesses and vulnerabilities in old lock structure, new locks, like the ones we use at Conservation Construction of Houston, are engineered to sit on top of the windows out of reach from thieves rather than at the bottom of the window. This gives you better overall protection. Thieves can’t just crack open the windows and shimmy locks open. As long as the windows are locked they are almost impossible to open from the outside.

Two Point Locks

Our Texas Windows use a specialized lock that ensures even better protection than other window locks on the market. That’s because we use a two point locking system. The two point lock basically has two different locks or keyed cylinders included in the handleset. What this boils down to is that you need to push in one part of the lock to be able to twist the other mechanism to get the lock to open. Two point locks need both pushing and pulling for them to unlock. This is impossible to accomplish unless you are inside the house. This is what makes them so secure for home windows. At Conservation Construction of Houston all of our windows come with two point locking systems to ensure better protection.

Lifetime Warranties

At Conservation Construction of Houston we have lifetime limited warranties on all of our products. This covers the entire window –locks included. If anything ever goes wrong with your window we’ll have it covered under the warranty. You’ll have windows and locks that will truly stand the test of time!

Final Thoughts

Remember, if you have ancient windows with old slide “Sash Locks” on the bottom of the window your house is more vulnerable to break-ins. If your windows are more than 20+ years old it may be time to consider getting new windows as modern windows are more energy efficient and secure. The best locks for windows are ones with two point locking systems to ensure better protection against break-ins.
